Winners at the 2024 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) Globe Awards
The Jury Prize for AFRIFF 2024 was awarded to Freedom Way, directed by Afolabi Olalekan, while The Honorable Jury Mention was awarded to Memories of Love Returned by Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine
The 13th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), Africa's number 1 destination celebrating film & visual storytelling in Nigeria, held from November 3 to 9, 2024, in Lagos.
The festival, which took place throughout the week with several activities, kicked off on Sunday with the screening of HEADLESS, a Michael Ndiomu Film which follows the story of a morally ambiguous Nollywood film producer found with a decapitated human head in the boot of his car. “The ensuing interrogation and investigations lead to the unearthing of unsavoury aspects of and the intersections between the world of politics and crime and the Nigerian film industry,” the movie synopsis notes.
This year's festival, with the theme, “Indigenous to Global: Cultural Wealth to Global Prosperity,” was filled with movie screenings, masterclasses & workshops, panel discussions & presentations, fireside chats, country presentations, and networking sessions, with several film industry stakeholders, participants and enthusiasts gathering to have important conversations about the film industry, and also celebrate and showcase various African films and talents.
For the closing film, OUT OF BREATH, directed by Obi Emelonye, was screened. The Historical Drama follows the story of an Igbo elder who must “challenge custom as he attempts to stop the ancient tradition of burying elders with their servants, putting his own life on the line and risk, for his own servant, the very evil that he is trying to stop.”
To close the week, the festival organisers gathered filmmakers for the highly anticipated Afriff Globe Awards night to announce and celebrate the winners in the various award categories.
