The Data Science Nigeria AI Network's animated 'AI for Beginners in Yoruba' series pushes forward its goal of making Artificial Intelligence accessible to all Nigerians in their native languages
Data Science Nigeria (DSN), a Nigerian AI and Data Science organisation, has launched an animated series that explains Artificial Intelligence in Yoruba Language, the language predominant in the Southwestern and Central parts of the country—spoken by roughly 47 million native speakers.
Announcing the launch of the animated series yesterday at Tech Summit Ogun—the largest convergence of Tech-disruptors, innovators, startups, organizations and technology enthusiasts in Ogun State—the company wrote, “The DSN AI Network animated AI for Beginners in the Yoruba language is officially launched for use.”
Data Science Nigeria (DSN), established in 2016, says it is Africa’s foremost AI and Data Science organisation, leading in talent development and sector-specific solutions. According to the company, this initiative pushes forward its goal of making Artificial Intelligence accessible to all Nigerians in their native languages, equipping them with the tools to unlock AI’s potential for personal and national growth. “It reaffirms our commitment to democratising AI knowledge, building on the success of our first AI series in Hausa’,” it shared.

DSN, which won the ‘Nigerian AI Research Grant 2023’ and co-facilitated the ‘Nigeria National AI Strategy,’ says the launch of this initiative is in line with the vision of Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, “whose commitment to inclusive AI education ensures that everyone, regardless of location, gains insights into the technology shaping their future, as laid out in the national AI strategy.”
The Minister, who despite the many criticisms of his focus on AI since coming into office in 2023, has been very vocal on how he thinks artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the country into an economic powerhouse. But critics say that the minister’s AI ambitions are premature, citing existing infrastructure problems.
The animated series, which is available for free on YouTube, is a 40-part series voiced in Yoruba language. And each episode runs for about four to seven minutes, covering topics such as AI for legal document review, AI for fashion designers, AI for diagnosis, AI for fraud detection, AI for identifying plant diseases, AI for self-driving cars, AI for facial detection and recognition, AI for customer reviews, AI for loan prediction, AI for speech recognition, and AI for reinforcement learning.
The newly launched animated series is the second of its kind from the company; the first being its ‘AI series in Hausa,’ which is also available for free on YouTube.
