This comprehensive study, which aims to look at the state of design in Africa, will explore and highlight the landscape of design in Africa and the diaspora. The study will answer the following questions: Who is designing in Africa? How and what are designers learning? Where and how do designers work? What are designers earning? How are designers organizing themselves?
“We aim to clarify viable education and career paths for designers and to understand the present wellbeing of the modern designer in Africa,” the announcement noted. “We aim to validate the ROI of design in business. We also aim to illustrate the benefits of communities to designers in Africa today.”
To participate in the study, designers are required to fill the online anonymous survey. “We've created an online anonymous survey open through the rest of the year. We will be analysing this data and releasing an extensive report in early 2025. This survey is designed to be easy to complete in about 5–10mins,” it shared. “Our hope is that with this resource, we can be better informed about design, designers, and design business in Africa going forward.”
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the designers participating in this year’s survey. For design communities, we can't wait to work with you in creating a more complete view of our ecosystem,” it added.

It should be noted that this survey is the second of its kind by Àșà Design. In 2021, it released the first edition titled “The State of Design by Àșà: Deep dive into the data shaping Nigeria's design ecosystem.”
According to data from the 2021 survey, for every 3 male designer there was 1 female designer. It also showed that most designers earned between ₦50 - 150k monthly with very few designers making 10x.
The 2021 data also revealed that there was generally positive indication (>50%) that design communities were crucial in helping members rapidly upskill and find job placements. Check out more insights from the 2021 survey.
