ART X Lagos announces winners of the Access ART X Prize 2023
It announced Julius Agbaje as the winner of the Nigeria Prize Award of the Access ART X Prize 2023 and Asmaa Jama as the winner of the Africa/Diaspora Prize Award of the Access ART X Prize 2023.
ART X Lagos, the organisers of the ART X Prize has announced the two winners of the Access ART X Prize 2023.
In an earlier announcement, it revealed the top 10 finalists for the 2023 edition of the prize. Following further consideration of the top 10 finalists by its jury, it announced Julius Agbaje as the winner of the Nigeria Prize Award of the Access ART X Prize 2023 and Asmaa Jama as the winner of the Africa/Diaspora Prize Awards of the Access ART X Prize 2023.
According to the announcement, each winner will receive a $10,000 grant towards an exhibition at ART X Lagos 2024. Additionally, the Nigerian winner will embark on a three-month residency at Gasworks, London, while the African/Diasporan winner will enjoy a residency at Yinka Shonibare's GAS Foundation in Lagos. Also, both recipients will benefit from tailored mentorship and an invaluable opportunity for cultural exchange.

In a further statement, it noted, “Given the impressive pool of talent showcased, the jury also recognized Roanna Tella in the Nigerian category and Lawrence Mwangi in the African/Diaspora category with Honorable Mentions. Both artists will be awarded $2,000 prizes along with personalized mentorship.”
Created by ART X Lagos and sponsored by Access Corporation, the Access ART X Prize awards early-career artists from Africa and its diaspora opportunities to develop their practices, with the intention of setting them up for the highest levels of success on the global stage.
Previous winners of the prize include Dafe Oboro (2022 Nigerian Winner), Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński (2022 African/Diasporan Winner), Chigozie Obi (2021), Etinosa Yvonne (2019), Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola (2018), Habeeb Andu (2017), and Patrick Akpojotor (2016).
