Morenike Olusanya, popularly known as Renike, wins The Future Awards Africa Prize for Arts and Literature 2023.
After being nominated for the second time in a row (the first being in 2022), Renike won and was presented with The Future Awards Africa Prize for Arts and Literature 2023 at the 17th edition of The Future Awards Africa (TFAA) that took place on Sunday, October 22, at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.
According to TFAA, the prize seeks to highlight the extraordinary achievements of visual, performance and digital artists in the field of creative and visual arts within the year in review. The award for literature is given to a young person who has successfully written, published or marketed books.
Renike, a visual and book cover artist, and illustrator, is widely known for her personal work which focuses on presenting black women in soft and subtle tones. With clients such as Hulu, Penguin Random House, and Scholastic, Renike has worked with some of the biggest brands across the globe.
Renike, a Visual Arts graduate of the University of Lagos, said she always drew when she was a child before even getting into the university. She wrote; “I just liked drawing from when I was little. I was introduced to other traditional art mediums during my time at the university and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts. I specialised in Graphic Design and started learning digital art in my 3rd year, during a compulsory internship period. I’ve continued to learn and been practising since then.”
While receiving her award during the ceremony she said; “I would like to thank God for blessing me with this talent that has opened so many doors and continues to open doors for me. I want to thank my parents for letting me practice art. I want to thank my friends for always supporting me.”
She thanked the organisers of the award and also gave a shout-out to the other nominees: Haneefah Adam and Michael Dubby. Finally, she thanked everyone who has supported her work on social media.
Renike is also the co-founder of Bawsty, a clothing brand “for all gorgeous girls, especially the busty ones”.
