Nigerian artist Lola Mewu completes record-breaking 82-hour painting marathon
Lola Mewu has broken the existing 10-year-long record for the longest painting marathon and awaits verification and final confirmation from GWR.
In Lagos, Nigeria, Multidisciplinary Artist, Lola Mewu, has broken the existing 10-year-long record for the longest painting marathon. As of the time of this publication, Lola is the latest Nigerian to have completed a record-breaking attempt.
Lola who first announced her intention to embark on the record-breaking painting marathon in June after approval from Guinness World Records, the global authority on all things record-breaking, has completed an 82-hour painting marathon to break the current 60-hour record held by Roland Palmaerts, a Belgian-Canadian artist.
She initially set out to paint for 72 hours but ended up painting for 82 hours. The marathon which started out on Saturday, 28th of October, 2023 came to an end at exactly 4:30 am on November 1, 2023, at Safe House, Adeola Hopewell Street, Eti-Osa, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The statement announcing the end of her GWR attempt stated, “At exactly 4:30 am on November 1, 2023, Lola Mewu dropped her painting brush after reaching the 82-hour mark in the Guinness World Records longest painting hours record attempt.”
“She could not have done this alone, big thank you to everyone who assisted, supported, sponsored, and encouraged her through this tough journey of exceeding limits.”
Over the course of the painting marathon, the paintings she produced were reminiscent of childhood scenes and memories, most of which were auctioned off and sold as part of the requirement by GWR.
During the painting marathon, many Nigerians and celebrities came around to support and cheer her up while others followed online through her Instagram stories and Tiktok.
While we await verification and final confirmation from GWR, Lola joins the list of Nigerians who have successfully attempted to break a world record.
