With support from the British Council, Ayanfe, the new artist-in-residence, will complete a two-month-long residency in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Announcing on her Twitter, Ayanfe wrote: “Working from a new studio in a different African country for some weeks. I’m making this post as a timestamp to come back to when I’m done here. Artist in Residence, Bubble Gum Gallery, Jo’Burg.”
The Bubblegum Residency is a full-time multidisciplinary studio residency established by the founders of Bubblegum Club. “The mission of the residency is to support, platform, and develop the careers of emerging artists through opportunities to create and sell work.”
Bubblegum says the residency prioritises emerging artists aged 20 – 29. The participating artists will receive studio space, curatorial support, press and marketing support, and a stipend totalling R5000 for the production and exhibition of their work. “Whether your practice finds articulation through the form of painting, drawing, sculpture or textile art — you name it — we are interested,” it stated in a previous open call.
The residency programme takes place at the Bubblegum Gallery — with on-site studio space for the selected artist — and is purely production-based. The artist in residence will produce and install new work for exhibition at Bubblegum Gallery in Braamfontein.
Recipients of past editions of the residency include Dinika Govender, Sinalo Ngcaba, Heloisa Hariadne, Aluta Null, Tzung-Hui Lauren Lee, and Muofhe Manavhela (recipient of the first edition).
