Abuja Photo Festival prepares for a seventh edition slated to take place this October
Slated to take place between the 26th - 28th of October 2023, the theme for this year’s Abuja Photo Festival is; de:/fence: INTERROGATING BARRIERS TO VISUAL EXPRESSION.
Now set for its seventh year, the Abuja Photo Festival is an annual event dedicated to the celebration of photography and photographers.
For the past six (6) years, Art for Humanity Foundation Nigeria, a non-profit organisation in Nigeria has organised the Abuja Photo Festival, an annual event founded for the art community and general public to interact with art as a tool for social change. Over the years, the festival has served as a platform to gain knowledge, showcase talents, exhibit works, and prompt interactions, conversations and actions pertaining to moving forward the photography, art, and creative communities.
Per the organisers, Abuja Photo Festival is designed to create an artistic dialogue between the capital city of the most populous black nation and the rest of the world. It aims to connect the international audience to indigenous art that highlights the existential realities of the modern world through local eyes.
In the previous editions, over 10,000 visitors visited the various locations of the festival for the exhibition and workshops. The festival has featured works from artistic movements such as Expressionism and Futurism. Creatives and visual storytellers such as Bayo Omoboriowo, Omobolanle Banwo, George Osodi, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Don Barber, Aisha Augie-Kuta, Reze Bonna, Anita Eboigbe, Hakeem Salaam, Nelly Ating, Yagazie Eguare have graced its podium as speakers.
The Seventh Edition
Earlier this year in February, the organising committee announced that the highly anticipated annual festival will be returning for a seventh edition and is slated to take place between the 26th - 28th of October 2023.
The theme for this year’s festival is;
de:/fence: INTERROGATING BARRIERS TO VISUAL EXPRESSION.
For this edition, the focus is to promote the “art of dismantling the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours that stiffens creative energies and empowering Creatives to soar” through learning, networking, and creating.
The photo festival will feature;
Photo Exhibitions
Visitors will be hosted to indoor and outdoor artistic installations on thematic images that raise public consciousness on the need to be more involved in the democratic process.
Town Hall Meetings
Creative conversations between artists, civil society, development partners, and government official that converges on drawing a roadmap for the role of photography.
PHOTOx
Collaboration with secondary schools to host exhibitions within the school premises for photographers to engage with the students.
Master Classes
Hands-on master classes are organized. The classes will focus on various technical aspects of photography as well as the art of storytelling for impact.
Sisters Art
An all-girls session that serves as a mentorship and support space that connects experienced female photographers with early-year and aspiring female creatives.
Photo Walks
Photographers will embark on trips to local communities to document the everyday life of the people and enter the images for a photo competition in the course of the Festival.
