The Bag Factory, a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation in Newtown, Johannesburg has opened up applications for the Young/Unframed 2023 Residencies. The opportunity is focused on Johannesburg-based young artists and aspiring curators between the ages of 21 and 35 working in the fields of painting, drawing, installation-based practices, multi-media, and photography.
According to the open call announcement, “Recipients will receive an intensive three-month focused time to create and exhibit at Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, including a working studio space shared with a curator, a modest honorarium, professional practice support, and an exhibition hosted at the Bag Factory Artists' Studios.”
It also noted that; “The project at this stage cannot support the re-location to and accommodation costs in Johannesburg, for the duration of the residency. This cost is to be borne by the recipients.”
The residencies will run in three (3) installments: [1] Aug - Oct 2023; [2] Oct - Dec 2023; [3] Dec - Feb 2024.
