Created in 1994, Rencontres de Bamako, the African Photography Biennale, says it is the first and main international event dedicated to African photography and video on the continent. “A platform for discoveries, exchanges and visibility, the Biennale is a major and essential place for the revelation of African photographers and the diaspora, a time for exchange and sharing with the Malian public and professionals from around the world,” it stated.
This year’s edition, which is the 14th edition, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Biennale. “From Malick Sidibé to Seydou Keita, from Samuel Fosso to new generations, Bamako is the city of all photographers, a place where their dreams come to life for those who were lucky enough to come and participate.”
With the theme; ‘KUMA, speech, silence, and noise’, this year’s edition is an invitation to photographers, videographers, sound artists, visual artists, thinkers, writers, researchers, and curators, to reflect on the quintessence of the profound ideas of speech or non-speech.
