In Lagos, Nigeria, Fola David, a Nigerian visual artist, has completed a record-breaking 1,050 square metre painting to clinch the world record for the largest drawing by an individual.
With this achievement, David, who is also a medical doctor, has surpassed the existing record of 629.98 square meters by Ravi Soni from India. David’s artwork, titled “Unity in Diversity,” shows a map of Nigeria highlighting the country’s diverse tribes through their unique attire, languages, art, and essence.
David, who started his record-breaking attempt on July 16, painted for six days to complete his record-breaking artwork for the largest drawing by an individual.
On Friday, the fourth day of his GWR attempt, David surpassed Ravi Soni’s record of 629.98 square metres. “Congratulations to us all. On Day 4 at 9 p.m., we broke the current record of 629.98 square metres, but we are not yet done!” he wrote in a post on Instagram on Friday. “The goal is to get over 1000 square metres of canvas covered in drawings; we are currently at 689 square metres. Let’s Go!”
On Sunday, after six days of painting, David achieved his target of over 1000 square metres. “My heart is full of gratitude. Thank you, God. Thank you everyone. Thank you for doing this with me,” he shared.
“Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create that divide between us.”
During the GWR attempt, many Nigerians and celebrities came around to support and cheer him up while others showed their support online.
While we await verification and final confirmation from Guinness World Records, the global authority on all things record-breaking, congratulations continue to pour from every part of the world for Fola David.
