Chuma Anagbado: Ifebube—a solo exhibition curated by Ugonna Ibekwe
The exhibition’s title, “Ifebube”, is derived from the name of Anagbado’s mother, Esther Ifebube, who passed away on July 5, 1999
From July 5th - 7th, 2024, Chuma Anagbado, a Nigerian-born Artist & Designer, will be hosting a solo exhibition titled ‘Ifebube,’ in Lagos.
Ifebube—a solo exhibition curated by Ugonna Ibekwe, an art historian, performance artist, and painter—is Anagbado’s third solo exhibition and is set to honour his mother who passed away 25 years ago, according to him. (The exhibition’s title, “Ifebube”, is derived from the name of Anagbado’s mother, Esther Ifebube, who passed away on July 5, 1999.)
“I want to honour my mom…I want the world to know who she is,” says Anagbado. In addition to honouring his mom, Ifebube, presented by Creath, is a showcase of Anagbado’s practice so far. “You are going to be seeing my collection of works from 2021 to date,” he says. “[This works] represent different phases in my career as an artist. It shows different themes and eras…reflecting my experiences.”

In 2021, after 16 years in professional design practice, Anagbado—who co-founded Aziza Design in 2014 and Mbari Uno in 2018—began full-time studio practice, creating ‘phygital’ art using technology.
Creath notes, “Ifebube showcases Chuma Anagbado’s recent experimental works, reflecting his extensive journey to blend his line drawings, cultural heritage, and passion for technology.”
It adds, “Fostering an identity, his themes are derived from the material & non-material aspects of Igbo culture – past & present. Ranging from wall mount to monumental dimensions, his works reimagines the age-long Igbo carved doors & ‘Uli‘ line aesthetic in patterns, fused with the body, in a spiritual performance between the abstract & figurative. Visually striking, his works are results of artistic experiments, creating at the intersection of physical and digital existence.”
“I think you are going to see a wood festival,” says Anagbado, speaking on what to expect. “You are going to see a lot of themes and messaging.”
Date: July 5th - 7th, 2024. | Time: 2:00 PM daily | Location: 59 Raymond Njoku Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.
